Havaianas The Reel

Overview

Havaianas is one of the few products a person can identify from its outline alone, which leaves a film with nowhere to hide: get the rubber wrong and the whole thing reads as a render. LOBO built the sandal in CG and let the form carry the reel. Pairs tumble through a magenta cyclorama. A single sole turns slowly against a city held far out of focus, the tread and the woven strap modelled close enough to survive a full frame hold. Then the outline itself opens up, and the silhouette of the sandal becomes a window onto live action, grass, surf, a pair of feet in the sun, so the product stops being the subject and becomes the frame the summer is seen through.
